Old gfx died: need quick help!

Hi all,

My 8800gts has died and I need to find a quick replacement without doing a full PC upgrade. I have no idea what to go for though as I'm confused by PCI standards (1.0 and 2.0) and at what point my CPU will cause a bottle neck.

CPU: E6600 Core 2 Duo
Ram: 4 gig
MB: Asus P5W DH Deluxe
OP: Win 7 64 bit

Have been looking at the HD5770 or GTX260 cards. These all seem to be PCI 2.0 so I'm not sure if they are compat. Also, will my CPU just end up slowing these cards down?

Thanks!

More about died quick help
  1. 1. 2.0 is backwards compatible with 1.0, although 2.1 may cause some issues
    2. for basically similar performance as your 8800GTS, look into the ATI 4850, 5750 and Nvidia GTS250.
    3. The Nvidia GTX260 and HD 5770 are solid upgrades from your 8800GTS and yes your CPU will not push them as much as a faster CPU but you seem to keep your cards for a while and you can always carry over one of these cards to your future PC.

FYI, the GTX260 tends to be overpriced compared to the ATI 5770.
  2. Thanks for the help. Kinda convinces me to go for the 5770, although I've never had an ATi card before. No real reason, just like (and understand!) Nvidia.
  3. for $150, the 5770 is the best card out there.
