Upgraded and windows only recognizes part of my ram!

so i had this board and 6gb of ram. my rig has been running flawlessly for almost 2 years on this setup. i sent away and ordered another 6gb kit to have a total of 12 gb ( 6 X 2 gb sticks) Installed the ram, system was a little loopy the first boot ( slow load times, slow restart times etc... ) than i noticed when i go to control panel under system it says: Installed Ram 10gb. whats the deal with that?? i am running windows 7 home premium. anyone got any good suggestions?
