which would be my best bet for gaming?

i currently am running the QX6700 w/ 780i chipset but am thinking about upgrading to an i7 and x58 series chipset if its worth it?

To be honest, I don't think it's worth the upgrade, those Core 2 Quads are still very fast, all the i7 really offers is around 10% - 15% higher speed in some applications clock for clock, and Hyper-Threading which some applications don't use.

Overclocking your CPU would show noticeable increase in performance too.

A Core 2 Quad QX6700 @ 3.3 GHz will perform like a Core i7 920 at stock. I wouldn't bother with an upgrade, it's still a very fast processor.

you can keep your processor till next generation playstation and xbox as the q6700 at stock is much better than both the x360 triple core and ps3 cell processors.
