Hello,

Im looking to build a pc for games and general use. Do you think and i3 530 with 4gb ram and an ati hd5750 will play games at an acceptable standard for the next few years?

i3 530 & 4GB will be acceptable for a few years (depending on your games) but the ATI 5750 wouldn't be acceptable. I would recommend at minmum a 5770 but would highly recommend a 58xx for better performance to last 2yrs.

You looking for chipset longevity and open to AMD options AM3 is where is at:

Rana 440
870 chipset
2-4GB DDR3
HD 5770 at the very least

Intel will replace 1156 with 1155 socket and IIRC even LGA 1366 come 2011

Yes, that's right, LGA1155 - one fewer pins than current LGA1156 CPUs. These sockets are NOT compatible, so you cannot use an existing LGA1156 CPU in a new motherboard or visa versa. Not only is the position of pin-1 different, the socket notch has moved from 9mm to 11.5mm from the centre and the entire voltage plane layout has changed.
