New hard drive

i have installed a seagate 320 gb sata in my gateway cx2610 due to grand daughter putting main hdd password on old drive and she doesn't remember what password she put on it. i guess my question is, do i have to have a windows xp startup disc. the hard drive runs but screen states it is not recognized....

  1. for starters you will need xp cd on it. next you will need to set jumper which hard drive to boot up (this is if both hard disk are connected).
  2. If the bios is set to sata mode, you will need to switch it to IDE mode as XP has no native sata drivers. Your other option is to leave the bios set to sata and create a slipstreamed XP insatll disk that contains the sata drivers or simply use the F6 option during the XP install to load in the sata drivers.
