I have a new system with a 256 gb Crucial M4 and would like to know if there is some way to check the firmware version. When I got the SSD it said 009 . The 9 looked to be put on with a sharpy over the i think 3.

Very easy, Download AS SSD.
Run it (don't need to Run the bechMark). Look at the Upper left and it will show:
Make/model
FW
Driver (and will show Bad if PCIDE:
Will show if partitions are aligned correctly.

Added:
latest version is 000F.
0009 Improved performance
0309 Fixed the 5000 Hour bug.

you don't even need to do that.

In the Windows Device Hardware info , it will show you that info. (don't have it in front of me, but it is there in windows).

Also, if you download the latest Crucial utility, it will smartly detect and tell you if the firmware needs updating. It will not just blindly upgrade
