ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: A quite PC would be really awesome, however, some sound is O.K.

I've been considering two builds. One has a AMD Phenom II x4 955 and a Radeon 5870 and the other has an Intel i5-750 and a Radeon 5850

What do you think of the builds? Would it be better to go for a better CPU or GPU? Does the 5870 provide a big enough increase in performance to make it worth $100 more? Also, I'm still not good with motherboards, I know I want one which supports Xfire and the PCIE slots running at least at x8/x8. Other than that I'm clueless. Any suggestions?

I've only recently ordered parts for my first build, and after much research decided to go with Intel over AMD. I know that the i5 750 is very well reviewed, and will likely serve you quite well.

As for motherboards, both Gigabyte and ASUS are very well reviewed. You'll do well to research the exact models that you narrow your choices down to.

A couple of recommendations for the parts themselves - look at newegg's combo deals for whatever you finally decide. This will save you additional cash. I'm listing a couple of examples below. Also, if you signup for Bing Cashback, you can get the XFX HD 5870 for $351 (free shipping as well) from tigerdirect.

I decided to revive this post because I am 1.5 days away from ordering my computer. Sadly, the a majority of the combos above are no longer available *sadface*

I've already ordered the OS, moniitor and heatsink, so all I need is the CPU, Mobo, GPU, PSU, Case, RAM, HDD and the optical drive. The budget I have left is roughly $1,150. HDD I would go with the 500gb version my self as 1TB is a hell of a lot of space.

So, with $52 spare you can get the 1TB HDD if you want it. Or you could seperate the GPU and PSU combo deal to get the GPU for $389.99 and stick with the PSU you have. I have no idea how good or bad XFX PSUs are, given their product quality I would be surprised if it was bad though.

This is 1173 but you will get 45 back in MIR both from Corsair ( One of the only 3 out of 5 MIR i got back ) then again there is tax and shipping. < not sure if that's in the budget or not.
