PSU for i7 build

Hi,

I'm considering various options for power supplies. At the moment, my system looks something like this:

i7 930 -- planning on OC
Radeon HD 5830
6GB DDR3 1600
GA-X58A-UD3R Mobo
WD 1TB Caviar Black hdd

Questions:

1. 600W psu sufficient? eXtreme psu calc suggests ~550W; not sure how closely to adhere to that number.

2. Any specific suggestions for psu's? In general, I'm looking for energy efficiency, and I'm not really sure how to interpret specs @ newegg (>80% efficiency -> how much greater?)

Thanks very much!

More about build
  1. corsair 650watts.
  2. Thanks for the speedy reply!

I've been looking at that psu: how does it compare in energy efficiency to something like Cooler Master 650W

    or even Corsair 550W?

    Thanks again!
  3. corsiar brands are much more reliable. i assure you.
  4. So, I've been doing some reading, and I have an updated question:

    Corsair 650 HX vs. TX?
  5. i think HX is the modular type which is easy for cable mangemet and TX is the non modular. i think not sure though. but thats the difference
  6. HX also costs more and has higher efficiency.
  7. One more question:

    What about Corsair VX550?

    Cutting it too close?
  8. Corsair are good ...better would be Ultra X 4 750 0r 850

I've read different opinions about this:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/252702-28-which-1000w-ultra-corsair

    vs.

    http://www.overclock.net/power-supplies/543200-ultra-vs-corsair.html

But back to my question, would VX550 be cutting it too close for my needs?

@foxmulder13 750W/850W seems like a lot; do you really think I need that much power?

    Thanks very much!
