Hi all and thankyou in advance of any posts or replys to my posting.
ive just been given a laptop to repair untill lastnight it just needed a
format , but the owner decided to play around and basicaly put a bios
password in and forget the password.
Whats unusual is that it states setup password .. it boots to a post screen
saying to press f2 to enter setup or f12 to network boot ... on a pc i
wouldnt need to access the setup screen but on this machine it hangs, do i
have to take the bios battery out if it has one ? or is there an easier way
to get this machine to a prompt

IF it's a BIOS password then removing the backup battery (assuming it isn't
soldered to the board) along with the main battery and PSU for 30sec should
do the trick. However:
1) Many backup batteries are soldered to the board so you'll need to short
their pins for a few seconds to clear.
2) Not all BIOS passwords can be erased just by clearing the CMOS - you may
have to flash the BIOS with a specific option at the DOS command.
3) If the password is on the hard disk then forget it! They can't be
bypassed (at least, not in any way I'm aware of) and you'll need to replace
the HDD.

Hi Peter,
As far as I can remember the RTC battery is under the keyboard it plugs into
the main board and is green in colour. I think there is a single screw on
the underneath of the laptop that holds the keyboard in, then you will need
to release the black catches at the bottom of the keyboard.

While removing the CMOS battery will often clear a Power On Password, this
will have _NO_ effect on a Supervisor (BIOS) Password.
