Can i use a standard ATX power supply in a precision 490?

Forum CPU & Components : Power Supplies, Cases & Mods Can i use a standard ATX power supply in a precision 490?

Hi There

I have bought a second hand Precision 490 with 1no xeon 5140 currently installed with HDD etc.. etc..

I want to updrade the power supply to an enermax 850watt unit but i am unsure whether the enermax unit will have the correct connectors and setup to power a duel xeon MOBO?

the precision looks like it has a standard ATX 24 pin Power 1 supply (as they put it) and a 20 pin CPU supply (power 2)

i had picked this brand of PSU due to its modular capabilities and good reviews.

please let me know if im "peeing into the wind" here!!

many thanks

whatever "peeing in the wind" means im not sure if thats a good idea. it might come back and hit you in the face...

meanwhile that happens...
on your motherboard, for an atx psu to be compatible:
-either 20pin or 24 pin (2x10/2x12) atx main power
-either 4/8 pin cpu power

if it has anything else no its not compatible.
and then the psu must physically fit. maybe upload a picture and we can look if it seems the right shape, etc.

yes it does most definitely get you wet, which is why it is a bad thing !

i am unable to attached a image for some reason, unless its my user error. (probably is)

all i do know is that the motherboard has 2no power connectors. 1no 24pin and 1no 20pin. Its the 20 pin one that's throwing me off when specing a suitable power supply.

if we can now say that an enermax unit is not compatible then could I ask if you could suggest an alternative?

my objective is to use a high end graphics card 5870 etc.., but the dell unit dose not put out the amps required across the 12volt rail to power this card.

thanks

its not the size and shape thats the problem but the connectors it uses.

its the 20 pin where you would normally have a 4-8 pin cpu power thats throwing me.

i have started the process of emailing dell but im not holding out much hope.

the dimms of the existing supply are as follows though

width = 1500mm depth = 98mm height = 168mm

cheers

sizewise most any atx will fit. connectorwise, thats an issue :)

yeh thats what i thought.

i have since discovered that the standard PSU has a 6 pin pci express power lead :D

using another thread on this website someone has said that it puts out 150watts to this connection so what I am going to do is get an ATI 5770 and give it a go using the standard hardware.

if anyone else knows of a more powerful graphics card with one 6 pin external power supply then can you please let me know as i dont know of one.

cheers
