Advice on MB upgrade to salvage my gaming PC

Hi all,

With what looks like a fried motherboard, I need a *fast* upgrade to regain use of my computer and recycle as many parts as possible.

I currently have:
MB: ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe (fried)
CPU: Athlon 64 X2 4800+
Mem: 2GB DDR2 OCZ EL PC-3200 Plat. Rev2 (400mhz at 2-2-2-5)
GPU: Leadtek Geforce GTS 8800 (PCIe)
IDE: DVD burner x2
SATA: 80GB x2, 300GB x1

On the side I have an x64 Athlon FX-55 and two Geforce 6800s.
I'm looking to keep the option of onboard surround sound.

Anyway, I haven't even *looked* at hardware in 6 years, so I'm trying to figure out the best upgrade path with today's parts.
It looks like:
A) the socket-939 chips are now useless, so I'll need a new board AND CPU.
B) My only option for recycling my DDR2 memory is to get an AM2+ board.

Does that sound correct? ...and what course of upgrade would you recommend?

Thanks,

  1. Does the setup perform how you want it to now?

Buying a new board for those parts may or may not make sense. If it works for you, an AM2+ board would work for you, but if not, no point in it.
