Welcome to Tom's Forum! :)

Many Dual Channel MOBOs can support 3 sticks, but it breaks the Dual Channel benefits. It's best to use QVL or RAM manufacturer's Tested 'sets' and often there are Triple Channel sets listed and compatible - with the caveat.

If you use two or four sticks of RAM, it will operate in dual-channel mode.

If you use one or three sticks of RAM, it will operate in single-channel mode.
