I am looking for a PCMCIA Ehternet card for my Compaq Armada 4131T. It runs
Win98SE and I'd like to connect it to my cable modem. Can anyone recommend a
card that will work with this computer?

It's "PC Card", not PCMCIA card.
Almost any Ethernet PC Card will work. Find out if the laptop will take
a 32-bit (aka "cardbus" ) card, if so, that will be faster than a 16-bit
card.

I don't believe it will take a 32-bit card. Can you suggest any specific
brands/model numbers I should consider?

To be _perfectly_ correct, it's a PC Card in a PCMCIA slot! ;-)

Andy, that old Armada is 16BIT only (non-Cardbus), but there are tons of old
cards on eBay that will work with it. Look for a Xircom 10/100 card, as long
as you stay away from the "Realport" combo cards, it should be a 16BIT card.
Just make _sure_ it comes with the dongle!

It really doesn't matter much. Linksys, D-Link, Belkin, Netgear, 3Com,
Intel .... there are probably 50 firms that have made them, and there's
not a lot of difference, especially in the more recent cards.
The shift to Cardbus occured in about the 1997 timeframe, when systems
were 100 to 166 MHz Pentium I's. If you system is signifcantly newer
than that, it will probably take a Cardbud card.
You can get used Ethernet cards on E-Bay for as little as $5.

No kidding, those dongles usually cost at least $15!

Actually, when the cards first came out, they were called "PCMCIA
cards". The name changed to plain "PC cards" somewhere along the line.
See reference below.

Do a search on Froogle.com for 3CXFE574BT. This is the 3COM PCCard 10/100
card with XJACK. XJACK eliminates the need for the pain in the butt dongle,
which is easy to lose or break.
Do not get 3CXFE575CT because this is a CardBus card.

Circa 2001 3Com would replace them free, for the asking.

I wish I'd checked with them in 2001 then, rather than in 2003
