Dvd drive will not boot from mobo

i have a p55-ud3 gigabyte motherboard and i am trying to boot up my operating system. i put a dvd in the dvd drive and i get nothing at all. it wont even read. i have tried several sata ports on the mobo and cables. and a different dvd drive. this is a brand new mobo. any ideas? thanks

Is the DVD drive recognized in the BIOS? Also, are both the SATA data cable and power cable connected? Does the light on the DVD drive come on and can you hear the disk spinning?
