Hi,
I recently bought a 20D /w 17-85mm EF-S. I am very happy with the lens
(mainly because of the range). It could be a bit brighter, but hey - cant
have it all at that price.
Anyway, I have been thinking about possibly selling this and going for the
17-40mm f/4L. The reason is that in the future (if price becomes more
attractive), I may go for a full size sesor camera (no FOV crop). Does
anyone know if Canon plan to continue with the EF-S system beyond the 20D.
Will they support this system in their full-pro DSLR bodies? (such as 1Ds
MkII). What is the future of this lens format?? Have they made any
announcements to this effect?

They don't announce such things. But the fact that they have introduced
two new EF-S lenses in the past 5-6 months (17-85IS & 10-22) is a strong
message that this system will be around for quite a while.

The EF-S lenses are designed for the smaller sensors. They do not properly
cover the area of a full size sensor. So, while the EF-S series may or may
not continue, it cannot, by design, work in a DSLR or Film SLR with a 35mm
format sensor.

This subject has been discussed here quite a bit lately. The *general* view
seems to be that Canon will stay with the smaller sensor except in their
high end pro dslrs. That means that the EF-S lenses will be around for
awhile. On the other hand, if a full pro camera is in your future, it is
hard to go wrong buying 'L' glass. But, I would not trade for the L lens
for the sole reason that you think the EF-S series will be discontinued.

Looks like they are keeping the 1.6x sensor size in the consumer cameras so
it's logical to believe they will keep making wide angle -S lenses for a while.

No, the 1D series (all four of them) have larger sensors, either 1.3x or 1.0x,
so the smaller-coverage lenses won't cover the sensor.

As I've been thinking along the same lines as you, (though I have not yet
gone digital), I'm seriously thinking of moving from Nikon to Canon lenses.
I also have an extensive MF system, which seems to be depreciating by the
second, and has probably passed the point of no return.
It's always possible that Canon isn't sure of the future either, and have a
foot in both camps. Though I suspect they are really aiming to win over MF
digital back users with their relatively cheap and convenient 1Ds MkII
cameras.
....but concerning your EF-S lens? Personally, I'd sell it.

I believe this view is wrong.
The ease with which Kodak issued a full-frame DSLR, followed by two updates
(one for Nikon the other Canon mount) and the current $3500 selling price of
the DCS Pro SLR/c, make me think full-frame is not as far away as it seems.
Neither Canon EFS lens is very good, although the wide-angle (10-22 is it?)
might be better. The 18-55/3.5-5.6 EFS might be worth buying for < $100,
but the 17-85/4-5.6 IS EFS is way overpriced. The 28-135/3.5-5.6 IS is a
much better value if you want a relatively small/lightweight IS lens.

Hm, yes indeed.
Probably the price of the D1s II is just because they can get that
price, not an inherent necessity.

If you think the Rebel/20D cameras are a marketing success, then look
for canon to introduce more lenses for the cameras.
The 17-85 EF-S is a good general purpose lens and if your prints are in
a range up to 8X10 (or there abouts) and you do the processing of your
pictures, you should do quite well with this lens. There is supposedly a
picture quality advantage in using the EF-S lenses with the smaller APS
size sensors as opposed to using lenses made for 35mm size sensors.
Still, Canon will produce the larger lenses for their ace cameras,
digital and film.
The 17-40 f-4 L lens is a winner lens, but on the 20D, the lens becomes
a 27-64mm lens. You already have the 17-85mm lens which becomes a
27-136mm lens and you can't beat that range for a general all purpose
lens. If you're searching for opinions, I would advise you to keep the
17-85mm EF-S lens and the 20D camera and process your pictures yourself.
If you're planning seriously to someday dump the 20D in favor of a 1D
series camera, then go for the 17-40mm lens, but the 20D camera is a
winner in it's own right and if you ignore uptrend advertising, you'll
find you'll be doing very well with the 20D.
