I'm pretty much a newbie to the world of digital photo's and I seem to have
a newbie problem.

When I download photo's from my Canon to the computer using ZoomBrowser they
come out bright and clear. But when I Email them using a 60% compression
they arrive quite dark. I'm not sure what people are using to view them but
I am sure that it's nothing unusual.

Any suggestions or countermeasures anyone could suggest would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Perry.

Have you tried emailing them to yourself, and seen this darkness for
yourself, or are people telling you they're dark?
Compression never make mine dark, and I can't think of any reason
emailing would do so either. (Of copurse, sometiomes things happen
without me understand why, too.)
What are you using as an email client?

Also, have you set up your screen properly (do a Google on 'screen
gamma', or just go here:

http://www.normankoren.com/makingf [...] #gamadjust

...and do your friends use CRT's whereas you use an LCD, or are they/you
on Apple Mac's, etc...?

(And you thought this stuff was going to be easy..) (O; Don't worry,
it gets better as you go!

One issue is that images often look darker on Windows machines than
they do on Macs, because Macs use corrected gamma. I set my Macs to a
compromise gamma.

I Emailed the images to myself and, sure enough, the image came through
bright and clear. However I don't seem to be able to fix the recipient's
computer / monitor.

I ran "QuickGamma" and followed instructions but am unable to get the
brightness on the monitor high enough to view the gray bars (I assume anyone
reading this is familiar with "QuickGamma". Is there a fix or are we left
with buying a new monitor?

To me it sure seems like a new monitor is about the only option.

Thanks,
Perry.

That is very likely the case.
I have numerous monitors at my work, and one of the most common indicator of
a slow death is the loss of ability to show bright images...and
strangely--in other monitors...the inability to show darks. Sony monitors
seem to have a tendency to get too light. Others tend toward the oposite.

Get them to calibrate their monitors at this page:
