Has anyone replaced an HP Pavilion DVD/RW drive that stopped working? Do I have to buy the same part? Where can I purchase a part? I don't want to talk to HP again; they just want your money.

You don't have to buy the same part. Although the oem's would like you to think that. Just look in the back to find the connector, if its a giant ribbon than its an ide connector. If its a small wire, than its a satat connector.
Here all of these are compatible:

You just need to figure out which connector you have and BOOM you can buy any replacement you want!

Thank you. Do these go into notebooks or only desktop type? I have a notebook and when I search for that specifically it doesn't give me any options. Are the slimline ones the only type for me? I did find that I have the ribbon type although I haven't fully taken it apart yet. The tray has broken free so I can see inside.
