I am going to build a new system sometime soon. Hopefully, it will be in a week or two. This is going to be my computer for college, so I would like it to be a decent gaming computer, but as I will hopefully be doing more in college than playing computer games, I am willing to sacrifice some speed for better price/performance. There's really nothing else taxing I would use the computer for, possibly media transcoding. My current computer is an e5200 at 3.5 GHz, 9800gt, and 6 gigs of DDR2 on a P35-DS3L. I want the computer to be justifiably faster than this.
I won't be reusing anything besides a few fans. I also already have a case and OS. I would like to do a Phenom 955 build, and not spend more than $800. As I said I would like to do this sooner, but if there's any new parts coming out soon I don't mind waiting. The only things I could find that might be worth the wait are the new 95w 955 and the GTX 460 (at least it might lower Radeon prices). I'm also open to a completely different build, but it seems the 955 is the best bet for my price range, and I would prefer a quad core. I will defiantly overclock. I am from the US, and prefer Newegg. I don't have a monitor yet, but I can't imagine getting anything more than 1680x1050. So far I have the following:
MoBo:
Not sure yet, I would like a MicroATX board, because then I could use my smaller case, but if there's much better ATX for around $100, it can work. - $100
RAM:
Whatever the best 4 gig set I can get for around $100 at the time of build, right now looks like some 1600 G.Skill Ripjaws - $100
PSU:
Either an Antec or Corsair 550-650, depending on how much everything else costs. - $65-80
CPU:
AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE - $160
Graphics:
Radeon 5830 (unless something else comes to the $200 price range) - $220
HDD:
Probably a Caviar Black 750-1TB, whatever is best around $80
DVD Drive - $20
I'll also add an aftermarket HSF, looking right now at the 212+ or the Sunbeam CR-CCTF. Would like to spend around $30
Total comes to about $800.
So basically, I'm looking for any advice on this I should change, stuff I should wait for, etc. My main concern is a faster computer than my old one, so even completely different builds are welcome. I've also been toying with the idea of an Athlon x3 440 with an AM2+ board, using my old RAM but getting a card like the 5850.
