Friend and I building a Computer for gaming 500 give or take some if its worth t

I have been looking all over forums and websites to get idea's for a custom built computer. My friend has a computer right now but not sure what is exactly wrong with it I have not been able to get a list of parts yet from taking the computer apart. I do have a little experience with building my own PC as I did take a computer maintenance class in high school. The only problem with the one I built before it only lasted 6 months before it fried or something... and so before he goes out and spends his money on this I want to make sure what ever happened to me doesn't happen to him. My friend is into gaming probably the newest game he likes to play is Team Fortress 2. He would also like to just have a good stable computer since the one he bought off a person is a custom built pc but not sure what kind of shape or parts its in. I will post up a list as soon as he brings it over and we take it apart as he can not find the list of it anymore. but if it is worth the money maybe to just upgrade that system instead of starting fresh. What Is a good build that just would be able to run Team fortress 2, left 4 dead those kind of games. I figure as long as it can run those it can run everything else that he may need for college like msword ect... Thanks for taking the time to read this I would sure appreciate all the input

To be honest not sure what he got in the deal with that computer as it was a custom built computer for gaming but the person had upgraded so he was selling it. As soon as I can get ahold of him to bring it over to my house so we can see what he has I will put a list of the parts he does have. Also can probably go to maybe 700 or 800 if its worth it.

The thing is the Antec Three hundred is a better built case. The motherboard I chose can do crossfire (two cards ruining of one motherboard) at 8X/8X or a single card at 16X/0X and it has USB 3 and 2 and Sata3 (6Gbs) while that motherboard only has USB 2 and Sata 2 (3Gbs) and it can only have one card on not 2 like the one i picked. The RAM is fine I just pick Gskil usually. The Athlon II X2 is fine for VALVe games (they only use two cores) if you want it go for it it's just the X3 will perform better in some games plus there's a chance the X3 will have a forth core disabled that you can turn on (but it's not 100%). Also were is the power supply? You need a good quality power supply.

and also for the crossfire thing other than extending the life of having two video cards at half speed what would be the other pluses to that better FPS?
