What do folks here think of Picasa? (www.picasa.com , it's a free image
browser, basic editor).

I feel uneasy about programs that search my entire hard drive for media. The
way it says "Would you like to add all your images to Picasa?" was a bit
worrying for a professional photographer.. "now just hold on a minute!". but
as long as it doesn't move or change anything, I don't really care whether
it does a good job or not of indexing everything for it's own use. It does
leave irritating little ini files in every folder though. No use for serious
editing of course, but it's quite fun for browsing. The timeline feature is
really cool.

I've been looking for some simple and free software to recommend to my
customers for resampling, saving as jpg, etc before they send me their
images.

Two to look at. Irfanview and Freestone Viewer. You might also check
of FXFoto for some editing ability.

I tried Picasa for a while when Google first started plugging it, but I
found it to be slow, prone to crashing and lacking in features. I
uninstalled it after a week or so. As others have said here Irfanview is
excellent, ACDSee is even better. Personally I use Adobe Photoshop Album
2.0, which I find to be excellent, lots of features, easy to use and very
quick.

I like Picasa because it automatically updates it's thumbnails if you've added pictures since the last time you used it, and it's very easy to send pictures via email. Excellent "freeware".

I like Picasa because it screams next to Adobe Photoshop Album and much
less likely to crash. You click on a picture and say open and it opens
to the default windows image viewer which then should be irfanview. The
two go together great. From irfanview you can surf the same directory
the original file is located in. Or you can define irfanview to "Open
with external editor" so that it goes to photoshop for advanced editing.
I have 8,000 images and Picasa flies through them all. I'd try it.

It's good for a free image browser, and it is excellent for quickly
resizing images for emailing ... but I find ACDSee 7 to be much better
overall.

For simple resampling and touch up, either Ifanview or Xnview will do
the trick. For a little more comprehensive editing and cleanup you can
try Photo Filtre. All are freeware and all do a very good job.

Picasa doesn't index CDs, at least for now. I have Paint Shop Photo Album for making slide shows and .html files, and it
includes an indexing feature that will do both HDs and CDs. The program also lets you attach key words to files, for faster
searching.
