Display does not fit monitor screen. Help

I have a 1920x1080 native res monitor. I have run a ps3 and also a tv line from a digital box, both with hdmi and they run at 1080p with the display normal on this monitor. I am using a hdmi cable (tried several cables) from my new pc to the monitor and there is about and inch of unused pixels on all sides. I have tried playing around with the resolution and in ati catalyst with no success. I plugged a vga cable in with a dvi adapter for the card and now it runs fine. I want to be able to use the hdmi cable though, so I need to figure this out. Also, here's something wierd, when I am using the hdmi cable and playing cod4 if I change the resolution down to like 720p in the game it will stretch out and fill the full monitor.

My system specs are:

xfx 5850 @ 775 1125
i7 930 @ defaults
asus ASUS P6X58D-E motherboard
3x 1gb DDR3 1600 G Skill
ST2310 Dell Monitor 1080p 60Hz 23"

Worked like a charm. Thanks so much. I've been driving myself mad trying to figure this out.
