Hello,

i want to buy a new desktop computer and need your advice

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: max. 2 weeks
BUDGET RANGE: ~800 euros

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT:
multimedia
gaming
acad/proeng/catia
internet

PARTS NOT REQUIRED:
monitor 22" Dell 228WFP
graphic card Geforce GTX 465

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS:
european

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Germany

PARTS PREFERENCES: -

OVERCLOCKING: Yes
SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Maybe later

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1680x1050 22"

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
I have thought myself of more builds

1.)
Intel Core i3-530 103,50 Euro
GA-P55A-UD3 129,99 Euro
or
GA-H55M-USB3 99,99 Euro

4 GB memory @ 1333 or 1600 MHz
HDD WD Caviar Black
Corsair 550W or 650W PSU
GTX 465 graphic card

2.)
Intel Core i7 920 207,90 Euro
GA-X58A-UD3R 196,50 Euro

6 GB memory @ 1333 or 1600 MHz

+ rest the same

From value point of view the 920 dropped in price, so it would be an alternative.

Perhaps adding to this a cooler for oc-ing:
Scythe Mugen 2 Rev. B 33,90 Euro
or
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus 23,89 Euro

Which build would you recommend, and/or what changes to make.
I would like to create a balanced PC.

Cheers,
George

Welcome George;

Can you find a Core i5 750 for #1? Maybe a Core i7 860 if it fits in the budget.

CPU: Core i5 750 or Core i7 860
MB: GA-P55A-UD3
RAM: 4 GB DDR3 G.SKILL Ripjaws DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Model F3-12800CL7D-4GBRM
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500418AS 500GB
Video: GTX 465 or HD 5850/5870
PSU: 550W for 1 video card or 750W for 2 video cards
CPU cooler: Hyper 212 Plus

How is that looking on your budget?

For two 465s a good 650W PSU would do. However neither of the mobos in option 1 would support the full speed a second card could add, so no point getting anything above a good 550W PSU if you go with option 1.
And I vote for the Scythe Mugen 2, as it will be quieter.

I estimate that the second option will cost around €250 more than option 1 with a dual core which isn't ideal for the tasks you are doing. You can bring the performance of option 1 much closer to the performance of option 2 while only spending more on the CPU, to get either an i5-750 or i8-860 like WR2 said.

Thanks for the tipps.

as the price of i7 920 is with only 5 euros greater then the i5 750, would the second build make more sense?

I think it depends how much extra the 6GB of RAM will cost. But yea based just on the CPU price then it does make sense to get the i7 920.

You'd want to look at the total cost - not just the CPU.
If it's fairly close - say within ~100 Euros I think it's probably worth getting the 920.
