I built my current desktop a while ago, and it's starting to show it's age. Right now I'm been using it as a media PC plugged into my LCD TV. But it's really not that hot of a media PC as I can't play HD video, plus sites like Hulu skip like crazy when played full screen. This CPU is an AMD Athlon XP 1700+ on an nForce2 Motherboard. It has 2GB of RAM, and an ATI Radeon 9800 video card.
Are there any upgrades I could purchase that would make this computer a respectable media pc? Or am I to limited by my old motherboard to even bother? I'm guessing the later as newegg doesn't even list Socket A processors anymore.
Only the latest gen AGP GPUs offer h/w acceleration, etc to be worthwhile HTPC/media cards ^^ These dun come cheap either Our very own forums' however did get Blu Ray going back in '08 with a single core Sempron on the HD3200 IGP (780G chipset) but currently your options would be (cheapest) http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-780g-chipset,17...
785G chipset/HD 4200 IGP
If you need encoding on top of merely HTPC/media duty perhaps an AthlonIIX3/4 and 4GB RAM ^^
