New hard drive for laptop

How can I mirror the old drive onto the new drive, and if this can be done , will it prevent me from having to reinstall the OS?

If the old drive works, yes, you can clone it with hardrive software. I use maxblast 5.0, a free download. For other issues, you can use an original software cd that comes with retail box hardrives, if you can locate one. They act as a bootdisk. Other speciality software is available, but I haven't tried it.
