Two Video Cards - 1 PCI and 1 PCI-E?

Hello,

I am hoping to connect 3 displays to my computer. I DO NOT GAME. I just want the real-estate so I can use the web, email, twitter, Development Tools etc. and because it will look good on my desk.

The computer only has 1 PCI-E 16 slot so I was hoping to add another card to my PCI slot and use both.

I can only seem to get one card to work though. Is it possible.

I have a nvidia 8500 in the PCIE16 (came with the computer) and bought a nvidia 9400 for the PCI card.

  1. You should be able to get 1 monitor using the integrated graphics on the motherboard using Intel GMA 3100 graphics chip.

    What connectors do your monitors have?
    How are you trying to use the 8500? Have you tried using two monitors on the 9400?
  2. I didn't even realize I had integrated video :P as well.

    I understand that in Vista and Windows 7 you can video cards have to use the SAME driver so that may not work (or am I incorrect).

    2 Monitors: VGA and DVA
    1 Monitor: VGA and HDMI

    The 9400 is actually the wrong card, I am going to change it for a 8400 with Dual DVI - unless I can get the onboard working in with a card in the PCI-E slot?

    Thoughts? Thanks so much for your help - can I tip you?

    Yeah, I had been wondering if that was the case.
    And Im wondering if the OEM version of the 8500 has some other limits we don't know about.

    I think it's best to have graphics cards from the same family (as in Nvidia or Ati)
    Here are the Geforce 8400 tech specs
    I need to check and see if a 'dual link DVI' means it can handle TWO digital connections to monitors or it means using a dual link to run ONE monitor at a higher res like 2560 x 1600.

  6. A retail 8400GS PCI should handle two monitors without a problem.
    I can't find anything definitive about the OEM HP 8500 to explain why it won't run 2 monitors.
  7. Right, but I am trying to setup 3 monitors meaning I'd run two of a dual 8400 and then try to run off the OEM 8500. I can't seem to get the computer two use both card. Either/Or seems to work fine.

    When I have both connected I get an explanation mark under devices on the PCI BUS.
  8. There might be an IRQ conflict on the PCI bus. Did anything like a manual come with the 8400?
  9. I can for sure download a manual. Will do that shortly. Think I might have messed up my bios so that will keep me busy for the next 2 hours :cry:
  10. Bios fixed. Nice little nightmare. I installed Windows XP as I don't have 7 disc handy. I will try and get 7 installed tomorrow which will be my final config.

    Here is what I found, I was able to connect one monitor to my main PCI-E card which is a 8500GT (HDMI)

    My second card (PCI 9400) would only work via analog connection (wasn't recognized when connected as DVI).

    Again I will be upgrading to windows 7 and changing the card to an PCI 8400 with dual DVI but I am concerned it will not work. Thoughts?
  11. Can you list the specific brand and model of the PCI 9400?

    And it might be worth cruising through the HP support forums to see if you can find out anything useful about that 8500GT . Does it have both the Analog VGA and HDMI? All three VGA + DVI + HDMI
  12. I finally got my machine back up and running with windows 7 installed.

    When I insert the second video card in the PCI slot I get too Yellow Explanation Marks in Device manager:

    They are on:
    Intel(R) 52801 PCI Bridge - 244E
    Intel(R) G33/G31/P35/P31 Express Chipset PCI Express Root Port - 29C1

    Thoughts? The error is below:


    This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)

    If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.

    It means that the computer has run out a) bus power or b) that all the IRQ's are in use. I assume that when you were in the BIOS you disabled the integrated graphics?
  14. No, I'll go look in the Bios, I don't think there is a setting to disable it? I think just to set the default?
  15. I can only set the default card. How can I tell if it's an IRQ issue. The two cards worked in XP so I think it's an IRQ issue?

    Go into Start->Acessories->System Tools-> System Information - > Hardware Resources and click on IRQ

    That should show you the IRQ's of the system devices. List what IRQ's the cards are.

    Is the address of the PCI-e slot, and also probably the integrated graphics. Do you not have the cards in the system?

    Thats strange that their not listed..I assume that the drivers are installed?
  21. Yes, whats really weird is that when I try and open the NVidia software it tells me no cards are installed. The nvidia from the PCI-E slot is driving this display now though
  22. It sounds like a driver error then, try updating your drivers.

    There should be a category listed called "Display Adaptors", check under that.

    Thats bizzare, it should otherwise it means something is wrong with your computer. If it dosen't appear, your best bet is to contact HP support.
