Hey I am upgrading my computer and I need to know if anything is missing or if there are any surprises that i need to know of. I have used Linux for awhile and I know to ask before hand, I have learned. I have a dc7100 sff hp 3.0ghz HT, and an ati 2400xt with 4 gigs of ram, power supply is 240 watts.

I am upgrading to a 3.8 ghz HT with 64-bit, and ASUS ATI Radeon HD 4350 512 MB EAH4350. The specs for the ati card is here:

http://shop.amd.com/UK/_layouts/shop/ProductDetails.asp...

The specs for the processor is here:

http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?spec=SL8PY

The Computer specs are here:

I have my bios fully updated plus I have the intel microcode updater in Ubuntu as well. I really like this computer and it has been a great one. It runs smooth so i am choosing to upgrade it rather than buy a used one and take the risks, I don't have the money for a brand new one either at this point. I picked the asus to upgrade with because 1. it was cheap 2. it only uses 20 watts and my power supply is rather low( the 2400xt is 40 watts so i know that the asus will be fine). I already have the ati control center installed and in a forum it has been said that this upgrade was really easy to to as far as the graphics card. As for the processor, I am really unsure of what else I need to do. I really can't download the hp bios update because they are in windows soft packs so please if I need to flash the bios again let me know, or if there is any surprises with the graphics card, btw I have pae installed and running as well(there are rumors of driver issues with pae).

Sorry about that I fixed the links so they work now

I can't find a lot of info about your PC.
Can you install CPU-z and tell us the current model of CPU, and chipset.

Regarding the change in graphics card, there would not be much of an improvement in framerates with that upgrade, the 4350 is a much newer card, but is further down the range than the 2400XT was.

AH!

http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/Suppor...

If you look on the table in the middle, at the bottom of the first page it has a cpu compatibility list. It supports 3.8GHz Pentium4s, but the model listed only has 1MB of cache, and I'm assuming isn't hyperthreaded which the one you listed is.

This is the only 1MB cache P4 at 3.8GHz I can find, so this is potentially the best CPU on your support list but I can't guarantee it.

mine is the sff 3.0 ghz ht 530 processor and 915 express, I fixed the link above for the computer specs and the updated bios supports 3.8 ghz ht 64 bit. If anyone knows if there is anything I need to do before the upgrades that would be great :na:  . I should get them soon.

you were right, There is a little difference but not alot, the lag in games is spaced out more but when it laggs, it is a little longer. plays dvds better. Plus this card runs hotter, for 20 bucks I think it is ok.

I got the processor in and it is working, so is the graphics card. the processor is a little hotter than the old one but not much. The upgrade was successful, i am closely monitoring temps and other things for now since i did it like 5 mins ago. thank you for your help and for your post I really appreciate it.
