Picture Storage, flash drive or external hard drive?

I was thinking of getting an external flash drive for storing pictures but I was advised it's not a good idea. I'm wondering then, for this purpose is it better to use a flash drive instead?

What I meant was I was advised that it's not a good idea to use an external hard drive. But I agree that one backup is not enough these days.
