Programs starting by themselves

Hello,

My xp machine has suddenly developed a mind of its own. It randomly starts programs. If left alone it has started up to 20 programs in an evening.
I've run two virus scans, it is not connected to any outside source-internet, bluetooth, anything.
I'd like to avoid doing a complete restor right now, or worse, taking it out for an excorcism.
I'd welcome any ideas.

Sounds like virus. Try a few different virus programs. I had a nasty one a while ago. Ran 4 different virus programs, all found nothing. Problem was still there. Ran Kaspersky it found a virus, removed it and system still works fine now. You could also try scanning the drive for Windows or HDD errors using "HDD Regenerator" Its saved me from reinstalling Windows many times.

It's a virus however it could also that you have enable the programs to load at startup, what programs are opening?

Check the Task Scheduler, there might be something listed in there that is doing the deed.

Your anti-virus software does need to be XP compliant.

It refers to a wirelss keyboard that is doing the dirty, you need to use a wired keyboard.
