External Hard Drive problem

My Intenso USB hard drive will work only if connected after bootup on the HP Compaq XP Pro desktop computer. The computer will not bootup if the drive is connected beforehand, the blue screen reading "boot from CD".
As I would prefer this external drive to be permanently connected for backup purposes can some kind sole assist this aged semi literate
user help me. Thanks.

  1. please adjust your bios settings to set the boot priority to the internal hard disk. lower the priority or remove any usb related options from bootup. that should resolve your issue.
