Changing hard drives

Hello,
I have a Dell Dimension 2100 PC (w/Windows ME) and a Dell Dimension 3000 PC (w/XP). Can the hard drive from the 3000 be moved to the 2100? Tried this and got a blank blue screen upon starting.

yes, they can be switched but you would have to do a clean reinstall of the OS(and probably a reformat of the drive).

Hardware wise, yes. They both use IDE hard drives. Software wise, no. Windows XP would have to be reinstalled in order to run on the 2100.

You may need to reinstall windows. ME and xp are two different setups for your hardrive.

How is that done exactly? I have the system restore disc that came with the 3000 when it was purchased. Would that work? And if so, would the restore disc be used when the blue screen comes up? Both computers are 8 and 6 years old respectively and I have a new Dell laptop, so just thought I'd give it a try. Thanks
