ECC RAM operates at higher latencies than non-ECC RAM, but it offers far greater (near perfect) stability. The typical use for ECC RAM is in servers, because of the very nature of the server's use. Take for example a bank server, they handle thousands of online transactions a minute. These servers can ill afford to have any parity errors that would arise with Unbuffered RAM.
