Hi All!!!

Thanks in advance for any advice anyone is able to offer me.

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: this week

BUDGET RANGE: $800 - $1000 (AUS dollars)

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Playing games , watching movies, converting media, surfing the net

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Australia

PARTS PREFERENCES: I just bought a 24" LCD with 1920 x 1080 resolution so im looking at an i5 750 ...

OVERCLOCKING: no

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1920x1080

So my budget initially was $600 which then climbed to $700 because I wanted an i3 540 processor and now Ive stretched it to $1000 because I really want the i5 750 processor with an ATI 5770 graphics card.

Im buying it on ebay, so there are a number of packages available. Since Ive put up with an integrated graphics card for 2 years I want this to be able to play the latest games, so for my budget after researching the best I can get is an ATI 5770. I want the new i5 750 , after looking at the benchmarks , its the best processor out for my budget since the i7 is to expensive. so :

Budget : $1000

Using for : Gaming ( i want to be able to play the latest games flawlessly at 1920 x 1080 resolution on my 24' Acer monitor that I just bought)
I also want to be able to burn DVD's and convert media instantaneously( or as close to instantaneous) , hence my longing for the quad core i5 750.

Ive narrowed it down to 3 systems. these are

I would go with the Phenom system, but I wouldn't go with the nVidia chipset unless you're going to get an nVidia video card. I would lean closer to at least a 790gx or an 890gx chipset motherboard.
Other than that, it looks... good, I guess.

If u have to burst your budget and seeing your gaming resolution for games is Full HD: make a HD 5850 a number #1 priority

5770 will not be playing all the latest and greatest games flawlessly at that resolution. It will do well but will show its budget in a short time.

Are there no online equivalents to newegg that you can use to hand pick all items? Certainly in the US you can get an i5 750 build and a 5850 for $1000, obviously it is always tricky using another currency but with a website we can at least see what can be built. Really not a fan of ULTRA fast RAM with no specific brand and also not ultra fast and a new HDD which has no info about it

Thanks for the reply guys , I really want to play the latest and greatest games flawlessly, since I'm blowing 3months saving on this build. So I think that I will go for the HD 5850,but il have to go for an AMD (either a PHENOM II X6 1055T or PHENOM II 965) or il have to go for the dual core intel i3 540.

Ok so its decided im getting the ATI 5850 but what processor should I get? To recap I can afford

- i3 540
- PHENOM II X6 1055T
- PHENOM II 965

I MAY be able to really stretch my budget for for the i5 750,although I really dont want to and thats only if i can find nothing that AMD has to offer that is equal or better. Is the i5 750 that much better then all the other processors Ive listed that I should do anything to get my hands on one?

Oh and I also dont like the idea of generic ram etc....but the corsair and other branded ones are far to expensive with the packages on ebay.

Thanks for your time.

The i3 is definately to be discarded.

The Phenom II x4 955 or 965 are fine alternatives to the i5 750 at a better price, so if it avoids breaking your bank balance they are well worth considering. For gaming I would not bother with the X6.

Mosox has a nice build there. It is ALWAYS worth getting decent RAM. Take it from someone who experimented with ebay RAM (I made an experimental build using parts I would usually not consider in order to see where money can be saved in future), two RMA's and finally a full refund later, RAM is not something to seek cheap.

thanks for the advice guys. Now that I know I shouldnt skimp on ram , i think Im going to go for branded ram such as corsair. Also Im going to take you guys advice to go for the HD5850 so thats the graphics card sorted out, now Im just going to work out what processor I should get.

I ultimately would use my computer for gaming and for converting/burning DVD's etc , so i need at least a dual core , preferably a quad. Not many apps can utitilize a 6 core so , I think the phenom 1055T is out.

So my options are the i5 750 (although I dont think I can afford it) or an AMD processor.

Anyone have any recommendations that will equal to or surpass the i5's performance for a cheaper price? Im willing to go AMD if I have to...

Phenom 955 is almost as good as i5 750 in performance, but it'll help keep the price down.
