I have 450W psu in my system and have one spare psu of 450W. I am planning to buy 4870 x2 which requires more than 450W unit. can I use additional PSU to power my GPU?

Depends on your two 450W units, the 4870x2 will pull about 280W, but 75 of that comes from the 24 pin main connected connected to the motherboard so the primary PSU will will be under reasonably heavy load and if they are low end units a single one might not have enough juice to even power a 4870x2 alone even with the other one handling the rest of the system.

If you buy yourself a good quality 650W unit it will be plenty to power the 4870x2 and you dont have to deal with combining units.

thanks..but I just want to try. In which order i have to turn ON these PSUs? and as you said one of the PSU might not be able to power the 4870x2 . will it damage my system or just hang up?

Depends on the PSU, if it cant handle it there is a chance that it dies and takes the 4870x2 with it, there is a chance that it just shuts down. You would need to jump their green wires together so that when one turns on the other one turns on as well.

What make and model are the two 450W units?

thanks...
but "Power Requirements and Specs For Popular Graphic Cards Guide" in this forum says "4870x2>>>Recommended 54 Amps on the 12 volt rail for single card and 70 Amps for Crossfire." and i have 12V : 18A. will that be a problem??
