after i added the cost of all the other items (part of the computer) my total came to a between 700 and 800 (which is fine with me), but i was wondering do the parts that were mentioned in the previous topic compare to this?: http://outlet.us.dell.com/ARBOnlineSales/Online/Invento...

primarily the desktop that costs $789

here's a link to the previous thread I created: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/forum2.php?config=tom...

so yeah does the $789 computer on the first link provided beat the specs in my previous thread? (the cpu/motherboard and graphics card are the only parts that really matter to me..(primary use..gaming)

More about : update 700 cpu

In terms of graphics, the GeForce GTX 460 would absolutely crush the Radeon HD 5450. With regards to the motherboard, the ASRock 870 Extreme3 has expansion for CrossFireX, and overclocking (I doubt Dell's motherboard would allow for overclocking). The Dell's CPU would be considerably faster than the Athlon II X4 635 for multitasking, however this performance difference would be quite a bit less on applications which use four threads or less.

I really suggest you spend $40 more for the AMD Phenom II X4 945, because if this is primarily for gaming, then the Phenom II X4 945 would show a nice increase in performance compared to the Athlon II X4 635.

Haha, you're kidding right.

The Dell doesn't hold a candle to it.

Not to mention the better quality of other parts such as RAM and PSU that you will get by building it yourself.

The $789 dell has a better processor but only has 2Gb of RAM and doesn't even have a gaming graphics card so if you got the Dell for gaming you would want to buy another graphics card and may also need a new power supply to use it.

sorry, i forgot to add i actually decided on getting an AMD Phenom II X4 955, instead of the 635. It seems as though I'm better off going with what was suggested in the last thread. As soon as i log in on windows 7 i'll post all of the current specs i have for the cpu that i'll build. (EDIT: i was on windows xp but i had the links saved on my windows 7 mozilla firefox bookmarks) (i'll actually build it around my birthday (october 2010) so some parts may be a bit cheaper by then.

Edit: here are the current specs i've chosen for the computer (if there's anything you guys could suggest to lower cost but keep it as efficient would be gladly welcomed.)

^ Your bookmark issues are the exact reason I switched to Chrome, I've been using 3 computers on a regular basis for over a year now, and Chrome syncs all of it's settings and bookmarks to all 3 machines for me.

Now to get on topic, your custon build absolutely crushes that Dell in terms of gaming. If you get the Dell, plan on replacing both the power supply and video card to run your games.

how can you sync chrome..with chrome on another partition (my laptop has two partions..one for xp and one for windows 7)...cause i got firefox...and chrome...and IE (but the IE is not relevant lol)

also back on topic: alright cool thanks..

to rob2010: alright i'll replace the case with the one you suggested since it seems most cost effective than the one i had.

any other suggestions for the parts i got (i know now that it's better than the dell....(much better in terms of gaming) but is there anyway i can reduce cost with the same major parts, or any tips you all would suggest for me (to keep the costs down)...

or do i have everything i need now..??
