PCI-E v2.1 card on v1.0 MOBO, bottle neck?

My 8800 GTS 320mb has died after 3 years so looking to replace it.

I have a GA-965P-DS3(rev. 3.3) MOBO but can't see anywhere that says the PCI-E version so am guessing its 1.0 as 2.0 only come out about that time.

I know PCI-E v2.1 cards are backwards compatable, but would there be any bottle neck type of problem if I went for a HD 5770? if so could someone recommend a gaming card for 1.0 around £100 mark?

Cheers!

  1. 2.0 and 2.1 are both backwards compatible with 1.0, afaik, thought not 100% sure on 2.1. The limitations of 1.0 vs 2.0 slot would only be felt on the stronger videocards out there. While a 5770 is a great GPU, I don't believe it would be powerful enough to be inhibited by a 1.0 slot.
