Need advice for budget gaming build

My pentium 4 system needs updating. The Nvidia 7600GT AGP card is not enough for modern games and the 80 GB harddrive is full.

I'd like a new system in the $500-$550 range for parts.

Approx purchase date: June 27 or so

usage: gaming (Dead Space, Crysis, the upcoming Dead Space 2, Fear 3, Left for dead 1 and 2, Wow), internet surfing, droid app programming

not required: keyboard, mouse, monitor (1280 x1024)

preferreed websites: newegg seems pretty good, but open to anything reliable and cheap.

parts preferences: AMD mobo. AMD seems the preferred path for budget systems. AM3 socket seems to be around for a while. Would like upgrade path - more RAM, newer CPU in tme, maybe Crossfire.

overclocking: maybe crossfire: maybe

monitor resolution: 1280 x 1024.

I have this build worked out (cribbed from a Maximum PC article)

THe motherboard is sort of arbitrary...cheapest one that seems to support the new six core. Is there a better alternative...maybe with crossfire in the future? Or cheaper?

I know crysis could use a more powerful video card, but a 5770 is the most I can afford now.

There seems to be dozens of different memory types out there.

ANy advice on case/PSU ?

DId I forget anything?

  1. ^ Nice parts IMO...
The only thing I would change from the above build is the HDD...Get the Samsung F3 500GB - same price but this is slightly faster and more importantly less prone to failure compared to the current Seagate drives...

And as for the graphics card, the HD 5770 will max out Crysis at that resolution...Only at higher resoltuions say 1680X1050 and above you might notice some lag and that too with Crysis 1 only...Crysis Warhead will easily run at those resolutions with that card...
And get a open cooler type rather than a closed cooler one...

As for the case - Antec 200V2 will be a cheap and good option...
PSU - 500W from Antec EA series/ Corsair/ Silverstone/ Seasonic/ CM Real Power or Silent PRO / PCP&S/ OCZ will do...

    And OS ??
  2. $497AR all in (assume u got OS covered hehe)
  3. Thanks both of you!

I'll look into swapping out the Samsung F3 harddrive, though in batuchka's answer its in a combo with the case. That's good news about Crysis.

Batuchka, good work finding those combos.

Yes, I'll go with Windows 7, go with the cheapest price I can find.

    Thanks again!
  4. Ya happy shopping/building and u are welcomed ^^
