Surfing & Gaming PC built around GTX-280

BUDGET RANGE: Because this is not a primary machine, but secondary and mainly used for my young children I would like to keep it as low as possible to make use of the video card I acquired which is an Nvidia GTX-280 1G.

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: surfing the internet, gaming

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers, OS, video card (Nvidia GTX-280 1G)

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS:, or but open to other retailers.

PARTS PREFERENCES: None, but need to be good quality. AMD or Intel is fine.

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1440x900 on one of my 19 inch LCD monitors.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: I'm looking to build a system that will utilize a Nvidia GTX-280 1G card I have. I don't want the system to be so under powered that the Nvidia GTX-280 1G card is under used but it does not need to be blazing speedy expensive. It will be used for some games, but is not a primary gamer and will be used primarily for web surfing, web games, little kid games, and the occasional 3d game like racing, flying sims/games etc.

  1. Thank you for the ideas. I think it's turning out to be a bit more expensive than I anticipated. Anywhere I can cut some corners and drop this price range into the $300's?
  2. $357
  3. Ahh, you have brought this in a bit closer to me feeling good. I will go research that list a bit now. Thanks!
  4. Hmm now that i think about it:

Go with Destroyer + DVDRW vombo
    EA650 + GSkill 1600
hit the Asrock 770 and Rana 425 : more allowance in PSU

  5. Thanks still need to sit down and research it and make notes. World cup action today is slowing me down :-)
  6. Haha ok enjoy your matches ^^
  7. It seems my delay may have missed out on some special combo deals to save $$ or I'm not finding the same links as the picture above via my searching. Here is what I have in my cart right now, but I don't have a power supply. If I can cut a few more $$ before I submit and not lose too much I'm open to suggestions.

Here are the current prices and links which right now is higher than what I was quoted above :-( to the tune of about $430.

    AMD Athlon II X3 425 Rana 2.7GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Processor - $71

    ASRock M3A770DE AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard - $59

    G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1200 (PC2 9600) - $130

    Antec EarthWatts EA650 650W - $75

Rosewill DESTROYER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - $50

    Dont you want DDR3?
    There are quite a few DDR3 1600 for 105.00

I love these super inexpensive builds.
  9. If I can get less for more, why not? But is it lousy ram?
  10. You mean more for less? LOL.

What I mean is that you want DDR3 for the DDR3, 1600 capable MOBO dont you?
The RAM for 99-110 is DDR3 1600 which is supported by the MOBO, is cheaper and its Corsair, G Skill or Crucial.
  11. MORE for LESS :o I might have still had a pint working in me from the Portugal soccer match.

I'll go look at that ram you mention.
  12. Still have not made a final decision on this one. I'm hoping to do it soon. The gtx280 is in use right now as my primary card in my primary machine was sent back RMA. Hope to get that back asap and then order parts.
  13. um...arent you missing the HDD in that last build?
