Forum Systems : New Build First build help. (Non-gamer)

Word :    Username :

Been checking the forum out for a few days now and after reading tons of information, I would like some opinions on what I am thinking for my first build.

I am not a gamer, but would like a system that could do some basic gaming if I decided to get into it in the near future.

This build will be a general use machine for web surfing, light video and photo editing and some MS Office work.

I need something that will be robust and give me at least 5 years.

Here goes:

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: 2 Weeks

BUDGET RANGE: $1,000 - $1,200

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: light video and photo editing, MS Office, Web Surfing, Research Gaming

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: newegg, tigerdirect, amazon

PARTS PREFERENCES: None

OVERCLOCKING: Maybe as I learn a little more

SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Maybe, if necessary down the road.

Stay away from Roswell.

Get a better motherboard and get a cheap graphics card.

I would reallly go with an i5 750 build instead. The only reason I would go AMD is if I was going to get a 1055T or 1090T.

Get a better known psu, and you only need 400-500w.

The cpu heatsink you selected isn't that good. The CM hyper 212+ performs well and only costs $30 shipped.

+1 for that Intel SSD

Whoa some strange calls u made:
1. Non gaming build and 3-way SLI board :P Get the 880G with SATA 6GB/s and USB 3.0
2. Understand u want to have some room in case discrete but 750W a bit over hehe
3. I'd rather go with the new Sandforce based SSD
4. For about $938 AR

I forgot to mention that I need the case to fit in a smaller opening in a desk that I just bought. 17.5" H x 10"W x 18" D MAXIMUM

This is a good combo deal for your build:

OCZ ModXStream Pro 500W ATX Modular Power Supply + Sony Optiarc Black 24X DVD Burner: $35

Thanks for the suggestions and help.

Do you guys think that I should consider a 1055T over the 955BE?

Just thought of something that I forgot that may change some earlier suggestions.

In our new apartment, our 42" Plasma TV is about 8 feet away from the computer desk and I would like the ability to play movies from the computer to the plasma via HDMI.
While we are watching movies on the plasma, I would still like to have the ability to use the computer.
A friend suggested that I need a video card with "dual" cababilities.

Can someone comment on this?

Thanks.

Decided to go in a completely different direction with this...

After HP pissing me off and telling me that they will not sell to the Bahamas from their website, I decided to go the i5 route based off what I had spec'd out from them.

I need suggestions on Memory. I'm thinking 8GB.

Tell me what you think...

You don't need the i5 for "light video and photo editing, MS Office, Web Surfing, Research Gaming", you should get a cheaper CPU and a better video card.

You don't need the CD/DVD-ROM if you buy a CD/DVD burner.

I forgot to put in my last post that I added to my needs for this system.

Seeing that my entertainment center with 42" plasma is less than 6 feet away from my computer desk, I decided that I would also use the new build as a media PC and send HD content to the Plasma as a seperate monitor, thus the need for a GPU that could handle both at the same time.

Does that change any of your recommendations?

I am planning on pulling the trigger in about an hour or so.

Think that this will last me the long haul?
