Grabbed a Sony VAIO PCG-71312L from work that was being tossed out only because when you booted up it said "Unable to find Operating System" No problem. Worst case is it needs a new HD.
I did get a new Samsung HDD HM321HI/Y to pop in. Starting loading up Win XP (All I had on hand at the time) only to get a BSOD with the codes : 0x000007B (0xF7...something, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). After doing some searching around here it was most likely that the HDD needed to be changed from IDE to SATA in the BIOS. Only problem is that the Sony VAIO is limited and that isn't an option at all.
OK, so get a Windows 7 disk and try booting from that. Then I get another error "Cannot boot from CD - Code 5" and that brought me to finding the Ultimate Boot CD which gave the following solution:
-Download the Ultimate Boot CD. CHECK
-Burn it to a CD (see the tutorials if don’t know how to do this).CHECK
-Insert the Ultimate Boot CD in your DVD drive and boot the PC. Of course you need to make sure your BIOS is set to boot from the DVD and not the hard drive. CHECK
-In the Ultimate Boot CD, go to Filesystem Tools->Boot Managers->Smart BootManager took a few minutes to find that but CHECK
-Once the Smart BootManager is loaded, take out the Ultimate Boot CD and put in your Windows 7 DVD. CHECK
-Now scroll down to CD0 and hit ENTER...UMMM, there's no CD0 there
The CD drive is operating just fine but for some reason it isn't in the smart boot manager.
So what I need help with is either getting the CD0 into the Ultimate Boot Disk Smart Boot Manager or some assistance guiding me to the proper tool to change my BIOS settings to allow me to switch from an IDE to SATA. I have been bouncing around in the Ultimate Boot Disk for hours and have not come across anything like that.
Sorry for the long post and if it is in the wrong forum I apologize, its got a bit of everything. Thank you
