Hi all,
I've put together a collection of sample images taken with recent
camera phones: Sony Ericsson K700i (VGA resolution), Nokia 7610 (1
Megapixel), Siemens S65 (1.3 Megapixel).

It's about digital photography here, not silly plastic-lensed kiddies' toys
thanks.

Nope.
These are worse than I thought they would be.
As for the subject matter, a truly poor choice. Camera phones were
built for up-skirt shots of college girls by short Japanese people,
not for photographing Austrian/German villages.

Fascinating, Axel!
Takes me back to 1998 and my first days in digital photography. The Nikon
Coolpix 900 I used back then had 1280 x 960 pixel resolution, so the very
best image quality of these phones relates to the quality I got back then.
Of course, the optics of the Nikon Coolpix 900 are far superior to those
in the phones, and it shows, but you could imagine the 6 x 4 inch prints
from these cameras being "good enough" for many people. Well in a year or
two when they're even better. Maybe the low end camera makers will have
something to worry about?

Good heaven's, you are being brave posting that here I'm afraid the
reactions so far are exactly as I would expect them to be. Mobile/cell
camera phones will probably never be comparable to early digicams,
notwithstanding micromotor/liquid-electrostatic optical zoom lenses being
developed. Then again, I don't expect them to be that great either but they
will improve none the less.
IMO, whether or not they compare to digicams is missing the whole point of
them to start with. I own an SE K700i that's a hell of a lot better than the
earlier T610 I sold on (couldn't be worse). One of the best camera phone
cameras is in the SE S700 @1.3MP but not small enough for my tastes for a
phone. Some Japanese models are up at 5MP - all pixels & no trousers, I
suspect.
As for the Coolpix 8800 review, I'll stick with my C4040z for a bit longer,
thanks.
