Is my PSU causing instability and game crashes?

Hey there,

I'm running an NC Top 1000W Power Plus PSU.

It is not 80+ certified.

My specs (sorry for the Korean):

http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/2885/capturezn.jpg

Using HWMonitor and Speedfan, my readings (@ 0 load) are:

+3.3V 3.17V
+5V 4.70V
+12V 11.65V

Under load, the +12V goes to 11.1V.

My PSU is nearly 3 years old.

Is my PSU the cause of instability and game crashes (either to desktop or lock ups)?

After a VGA driver update to Cat 10.7 Hotfix, I keep getting a "displayport link failure" error message and a "low power" error message from CCC.

See member config for sig.

If so, I would like to change out my PSU for a Silverstone Strider 1500W.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Well, if it delivers poorly to the 12V link that's an obvious source for problems with instability. Why do you need a 1500w PSU? I can't imagine what you would need that for, unless you have 10 Hard drives, Quad SLI and a Power hungry CPU. I would rather go with a Corsair HX 1000, I can recommend that one.

Hello hunuok;

That 12V rating dropping to 11.1V is definitely out of allowable spec range of plus or minus 5 percent (min 11.4 / max 12.6).
It's also a good sign that the PSU is being pushed really hard and probably running hot. Do you have any extra case fans in your Cosmos S case?
There is also the possibility it's just a reporting error.

Your 5970 Quadfire and OC'd i7 920 probably need some extra support beyond what your current PSU can provide.
I don't think you need that Silverstone 1500W PSU though - one of the better 1200W PSUs is probably enough.

I could not find any reviews on your current NC Top 1000W Power Plus PSU.
The eXtreme Power Supply Calculator Lite recommended a 1065watt PSU when I plugged your system parts into the calculator.

After looking over a couple PSU review sites a few stood out:

Silverstone ST1500 1500W review @ Jonnyguru
Kingwin ABT-1220MA1S Mach 1 Power Supply review @ HardOCP

Did not make the cut:

5 HDDs, 2x5970s, i7 920 @ 4.0.

Yes. I have a total of 10. 3xFront Intake, 3xTop Exhaust, 1xRear Exhaust, 1xBottom Intake and 2xFacing VGA. Overkill?lol.

I used to have a pair of 4870X2s. Endless Heat Issues.

I think it's a Korean brand. Quite popular here.

I like to have a good margin of error.

@Henry, WR2 and Njure: THANKS for your time and effort. I googled this for 3 days, with "inconclusive" results.

Will keep you posted on results. :D

Hey there,

Just changed out my PSU with a Silverstone ST1500.

1. No blinking DP adapter issues (in Eyefinity),

2. No lock ups/crashes in games (except Dirt 2-I think this is a driver issue).

Thanks to ALL for helping out. :hello:

Cheers.
