What motherboard do you have? What AM3 CPU are you looking at? Many AM2+ motherboards will support AM3 CPUs with a BIOS update.

Foxconn doesnt have a real CPU support list up but they dont list any AM3 processor for your board, under the specs for your board on their website it shows

Processor: AMD Phenom™FX, Phenom™, Athlon™ 64x2, Athlon™ 64, Sempron™ processors, Socket AM2 and AM2+.

So you will need to upgrade your board if you want to use any AM3 CPUs

If you already have the Phenom II X6 1090T you won't notice much difference in gaming as compared to the Phenom II X4 955 or 965 CPU's.The performance will show up in some applications though.
Here is a benchmark comparison between the X6 1090T and the 3.2 Ghz X4 955 BE
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/146?vs=88
Now between the older 3.0 Ghz Phenom II X4 940 BE and the Phenom II X6 1090T
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/146?vs=80
Not much difference in gaming improvement a little though.
In certain applications yes there is a difference.
I have heard that the price drop in the AM2+ Phenom II X4 940 is quite large right now if one can obtain this discontinued CPU (Heard on one post that it could be obtained for $100 USD).
If you already have this quad core CPU (940 BE) I wouldn't bother upgrading.
