Hello, Does anybody knows if is it possible to put my dvd player from my old
and just broken down, ibm laptop in a Compaq Armada E500 Pentium III laptop?
Thanks in advance.
Bye, Guus.

It may work.. Theres a handful of Manufacturers for the drives. Ive
used different drives in other notebooks without problem. If it has
he same conector it may work but you'll have a hard time mounting the
faceplate.

Thanks, I am less afraid of the replacement itself, as for the stupid
configuration compaq mostly had. You think it will work too?

It might be, but there's no way to say for sure without a LOT more
information.
Often the drives themselves are "generic", for example the Toshiba SD-R
series of laptop combo (DVD/CD-RW) drives used in many, many brands of
laptop. BUT, not always. and even when they are, the bezels and
mounting brackets, which are not part of the actual drive but are added
by the OEM (Compaq and IBM) are model-specific.
In the best case, you can remove the brackets from the CD drive
currently in the Compaq machine and install them on the DVD drive in the
IBM machine, which might then fit into the Compaq. But there are dozen
or so possible pitfalls, which might prevent it from working.

If both drives are standard 5 inch (not 5.25 inch) slim form factor
drives at 5 volts, 2 amps, then you [probably] can swap. This
information is pasted onto the drive case. Most laptop drives of recent
vintage in this form factor have removeable/reuseable custom carriers,
bezel, and adapter for the connection that fit the slim drive form
factor. The remaining variable is driver, and XP seems to have drivers
for most recent drives.
The interchangeability of optical drives in this form factor is opening
a new upgrade market for laptops. As an example, NewEgg has a bare OEM
NEC dual-layer 2.4x DVD writer for about $150 compared to whatever the
laptop vendor has available at prices approaching $400.00. This all
depends, though, on the form factor and XP. Other OS's are still a
problem for drivers which might or might not be publicly available from
the OEM drive vendor.
Your major challenge might be how to get the bezel removed - about a
five minute exercise the first time.
