More smaller RAM sticks or fewer larger RAM sticks?

I'm building a new rig and am not sure which option to take, 6x2g RAM sticks or 3x4g.
Is one option better than the other? Is there any difference at all? Are they better at different things?

In my case the motherboard is a Gigabyte G1-Assassin XL-ATX
And the RAM is either Corsair CMT12GX3M3A2000C9 12GB Kit Dominator GT
Or 2x Corsair CMT6GX3M3A2000C8 6GB (3x2GB) Dominator GT
Both Triple channel

The end result will be used for alot of gaming and multimedia

Let me know what you think...

  1. Fewer modules consumes less energy and is a more trouble free setup. Sometimes populating all slots needs more tweaking of settings.
