More about comparable replacement 4870
  1. The HD5870 is about on par with the HD4870x2. It will also use much, much less power, give you DX11 compatibility and no crossfire scaling/compatibility issues. If you are will to overclock you could also save some money and go for the HD5850 which can OC past the performance of a stock HD5870.

    Also, is your CPU still a Pentium 4? that will bottleneck even a single 4870.

    I think that's just referring to the fan. Cant be a Pentium 4 or D with DDR3 ram.

    I think I am going to go with your suggestion on the HD5870, but I need one last piece of advice. I checked Tigerdirect and Newegg, but I have no idea what I'm looking for exactly to ensure that my system will be running as smooth as it once did. I do see the list of choices but I don't know which one would be best for me. Thanks again!!
  4. Yep. What is his CPU? If it's a Core2, it's already a significant bottleneck for a 4870x2.
    If it's a Core2Quad, then there's not much he could upgrade to except the 5970, GTX480 or Xfire/SLi configurations...where there'll be more bottlenecks.
  5. 2.85 gigahertz Intel Core2 Quad Q9550 is what I have
  6. That processor is still fine. An OC could always help though.
    Taking a look at the available HD5870s I would probably go for this one;
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102883
    It's the best price and a good brand.
