i5 450M (2.4GHz) 6 GB ram vs i7-720QM (1.6GHZ) 4 GB ram

I have to choose between two dell studio 15's.

One has i7-720QM Quad Core 1.6GHz (2.8GHz Turbo, 6MB Cache) with 4 gb ram and the other has i5-450M 2.4GHz (2.66GHz Turbo, 3M Cache) but 6 GB RAM and a bigger HDD. The i7 one is $60 cheaper. 320 GB vs 500 GB. Which one do you think is better in terms of gaming a bit as well but mostly day-to-day tasks?

Both have ATI rad 5450

the ram isnt everything the i7 - 720QM is better choice no doubt its caches is 6 MB
and its turbo boost is higher than the i5 you typed and at last you can upgrade your ram anytime you want to but if you are gamer i dont reccomend you of the both laptops there gpus are not that good get laptop with nvidia GTS 360 or GT 230 i would go with GTS 360 and if you are ati fan get 5870 M
    good luck

Ok thanks. Do you think it would be really costy to upgrade the graphics card if I notice the laptop is not handling games that well? Is it even possible to upgrade to that? Games like SWAT 4 or Call of duty mostly.
  3. well as you mentioned that gpu ati 5450 its really not good at gaming if you want high settings in game you well need better gpu to handle it and becarefull if you buy laptop and you think you can upgrade it parts later you are tottaly wrong the only things you can upgrade in your laptop is the ram and the hdd some of laptops can make you upgrade your gpu or install it by your own like alienware but alienware is too expensive you can buy 5000 $ laptop from them and get one for 2000$ from other company and its even better check HP website for high performance laptops or if you want the good choice go directly with toshiba qosmio it comes with i7 720 QM and GTS 360 1 GB GDDR5 mobility gpu this is all you need
take my advice and go with toshiba search thier website to find out more and you will be impressed
good luck you can ask me anytime if you needed help

There are some laptops where you can get a video card upgraded fairly easily. This is a plug in Mobility HD 5870 video card.

Dell does things differently - probably to save money. They don't use a replaceable plug in video card.
In this Studio 1558 the video chip is soldered into the board at the lower, pointed end of the copper heat pipe.
  5. Be aware that the i5 will run any modern game pretty well, and the i7 will get hotter and use more power. I considered i5 and i7 when I bought my laptop a few months ago and eventually went for the i5 because of that.

I would also add that I have 500GB dedicated to Windows and I can't even fit all my Steam games on it, so 320GB may not last you long!
  6. Thanks guys very useful information.
