Unplugging an external drive

I just bought a 2TB Seagate external HDD. Had USB 3.0

I was wondering if do I have to use the "Safely remove hardware and eject media" on my taskbar before I unplug the HD's USB cable and power cable? Can I just unplug it and go?

You always should remove a HDD safely otherwise Windows might have a fit and damage the filesystem on it corrupting something.
