Unplugging an external drive

I just bought a 2TB Seagate external HDD. Had USB 3.0

I was wondering if do I have to use the "Safely remove hardware and eject media" on my taskbar before I unplug the HD's USB cable and power cable? Can I just unplug it and go?

  1. http://lifehacker.com/5863810/do-i-really-need-to-eject-usb-drives-before-removing-them

I didn't read that, but assume there is something worth reading in there.
  2. You always should remove a HDD safely otherwise Windows might have a fit and damage the filesystem on it corrupting something.
