Hi all,

I specced up a system to build a Phenom II X4 955 and was just about to order when I thought... I'll just check how much it would be if I opted for an i7.

My AMD build came out as 1255UKP

the Intel build came out as 1377UKP

the difference is 119UKP, an increase of 8.9%.

I will be gaming only a little, mainly on RTS as well as using it to be an all-rounder for heavy Excel number crunching and watching HD web programmes.

Is is better for me to now opt for the i7 build?

What would make it the better or worse choice?

I'll be ordering today as I think the OS on my laptop is dying.

thanks, GinZ

If you haven't ordered yet, then what changes have you made in mobo/ram and what i7 cpu is it?

Typically, the offer of i7 920 D0 nahelem with mobo GA x58 (with usb3.0 and sata 3=-would like to have these to get some future proofing) and Corsair RAM is now not available. However these CPU+Mobos seem comparable:

Intel Corei7 920 D0 SLBEJ Bloomfield 45nm, 2.66 GHz, QPI 4.8GT/s, 8MB Cache, 20x Ratio, 130W, Retail + Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Rev.2, Intel X58, S1366, SLi/Xfire PCI-E 2, DDR3 2200<, USB3 & SATA 6Gb/s

or

Intel Corei7 920 D0 SLBEJ Bloomfield 45nm, 2.66 GHz, QPI 4.8GT/s, 8MB Cache, 20x Ratio, 130W, Retail + Asus P6X58D-E, Intel X58, S1366, PCI-E 2.0 (x16), DDR3 1333/1600/2000, SATA 3Gb/s RAID, ATX

each for 311UKP to which I can add RAM for c. 140UKP

my PhIIx4 955 mobo was the:

Asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3, AMD 890GX, S AM3, PCI-E 2.0 (x16), DDR3 2000(OC), SATA 6Gb/s, SATA RAID, ATX going for 112UKP

forgot to include the memory in with the AMD build so the prices are still about the same

based on that, go for the i7 then. Swap to the 930 though.

You are adding 6gb of ram to the i7 and not 4gb right?

6Gb correct. the i7 930 is quite a bit more. 65UKP more. is that worth it? is the 930 not just an OCed 920? thanks for the advice.

Another thing. I need to get this right away. shall I post a new thread to see if I have all the bits I need and whether it's balanced?

This will be my first time so am quite nervous of getting wrong bits (e.g. compatibility - my laptop currently on its way out and I can no longer view the mobo/ram compatibility lists on Adobe reader)

yeh, post a new thread under the new systems section

if the 930 is that much more than the 920, the as long as you o'c and get the one with the better stepping, get the 920

what the better stepping one? the 02? I am in the process of making the new thread.

Shall I put it as a question or as a discussion?
