Needing Upgrade advice

I built my current system about 5 years or so ago. I have been enjoying a new game (for me) empire total war but have noticed that my box can struggle at times and so I have been thinking about upgrading my system to better handle it.

SInce I first built my machine I have been out of the loop and really am not sure what I can/need to upgrade to to play this game. here are my specs:

Asus A8N-E MOBO
AMD Athlon 3200+ Processor (Socket 939)
2 GIG of DDR Ram
SATA 7200 RPM HD
Gforce 8600GT (256 MG) Graphics card (PCI-E)

I have read that I can upgrade my processor to a dual core on the MOBO but I am not sure whick one is best or if I can even find one that is 939 anymore.

I can have a max of 4gig of Ram at 400mhz (not really sure what mine is at right now)

I am not sure what is the best Graphics card I can put in this machine..

Any suggestions?

Your 939 platform is not worth investing more $$ into : just hit a AthlonII X3, 785/770/870 mobo and 2GB DDR3 and you be gaming current and future titles just fine with a GPU upgrade perhaps?

I agree with you that its time for a rebuild but at this time money is tight and I am just looking to perhaps only have to change one or two components.

I was looking at the XFX - ATI RADEON HD 4650 1GB DDR2 PCI Express Graphics Card at best buy for about 80 bucks?

Seems like a good upgrade.

You'd want to hit at the very min a HD 4670 as that could allow u play at 1280 x 1024 high/medium no AA/AF most current titles

I ended up getting the 5670 for $99. Its a nice boost. I can now play with most settings on high.

I bet if I upgrade my system to a mobo with a PCI-e 2.1 slot, it would perform even better.
