Partion raid ?

i current have a 1tb hdd i want to use raid 1 with another drive. could i buy a 2tb drive partition it and use the 1tb for the raid and the other as a free partition.

It depends on the RAID controller.

I wouldn't with a mb controller -- little advantage and if the raid controller on the mb goes or you have other significant issues you may have a real hard time recovering the data even on an identical mb. Moreover, I doubt that the mb controller would support that arrangement.

And remember not to expect that RAID 1 will save you in a disaster scenario, RAID is not reliable backup, just redundant storage, if you get a virus or whatever your attached "backup" is toast.
